FAQ
What if my culture doesn't have a specific, traditional style?
◇ Feel free to choose an era of history/fashion instead! This zine has placed importance to both cultural and historical fashions.
Can I use another culture instead of my own?
◇ Of course, guaranteed that you can provide detailed research within a doc (or otherwise) with citations--treating the subject matter with care and respect. The Head Mod can also provide help via their own research on what cultural dress you have chosen in order for cross referencing. The Head Mod believes in culture appreciation, and if anything seems to be leaning too much into appropriation and stereotypical depictions, a private discussion will be held.
What's the difference between 'Culture Appropiation' and 'Culture Appreciation'?
◇ "Appreciation is when someone seeks to understand and learn about another culture in an effort to broaden their perspective and connect with others cross-culturally. Appropriation on the other hand, is simply taking one aspect of a culture that is not your own and using it for your own personal interest." (Greenheart International, 2018)
How to see signs of appropriation?
◇ "Exchange, dominance, exploitation, and transculturation." (Rodgers, 2006)
◇ If you are still unsure, feel free to read though the "Appropriation or Appreciation" tab!
Are background/minor characters such as Lagler allowed? What about OCs?
◇ For background/minor characters of course! Go right ahead. For OCs however no, not this time. Though, if all goes well, Interwoven may host an OCs only, non-profit zine with the same theme!
What if I'll be turning 18 soon? Could I still join?
◇ As long as you turn 18 before the 31st of March, then yes, just let a mod know beforehand, or, when contributor applications are open, tick the box at the end which says you understand that you must be over 18 or turning 18th soon. If you're 17 at the time of contribution, a cesus will be held in the server, and the head mod will dm you to check DOBs line up with the cut off. This rule is mainly put in place due to UK labour laws and PayPal regulations.

Appropriation or Appreciation

In other words, any exploitation or theft of cultural motifs, then proclaiming it as your "own". Anything to do with the erasure of the original culture for self-fulfilling purposes, such as the twisting of culturally significant headdresses into a costume, or the overt sexualisation/fetishisation of traditional wear (i.e kimonos, and Middle Eastern dance-wear such as bedlah) is labelled as appropriation.
-
Appreciation, instead, would consist of research, staying true to traditional style rules, regulations. Understanding the significance of patterns, motifs, and accessories which make up the attire. And doing so with respect.
-
Interwoven is a fanzine who's main goal is to spread the joy of sharing and learning about one another's culture, and will continue doing so in future projects.
